Made by Howarth of London - one of the world's finest oboe makers - the Junior Conservatoire is specifically designed to make the oboe accessible to children starting out, using the conservatoire system standard here in New Zealand. It's Howarth's lightest student oboe (just 0.46kg), crafted from the same traditional grenadilla wood used in their professional instruments - so a young player learns on a genuine quality oboe, not a compromise. The keywork is simplified with semi-automatic octaves, and the keys are fully covered and extended to reduce the stretch for small hands, making the instrument easier and more comfortable for children to hold and play. The lighter, simplified design also helps protect the instrument from accidental damage as little ones learn. Pitched in C with a full chromatic range of 2½ octaves from low C, it uses standard oboe fingerings and reeds - so everything a child learns transfers directly as they grow. It's the ideal instrument to carry a young beginner through their early graded exams, before they're ready to step up to a full-system oboe like the Howarth S20C.
